Procedure

A mixture of methyl 3-[4-[2-[N-(2-benzoxazolyl)-N-methylamino]ethoxy]phenyl]-2-(methylthio)propanoate (1.01 g), 10% aqueous sodium hydroxide solution (10 mL) and methanol (20 mL) was heated at reflux for 1 hour. The mixture was diluted with water (300 mL) and washed with dichloromethane (3×200 mL). The aqueous layer was acidified to pH2 with concentrated hydrochloric acid, extracted with ethyl acetate (3×200 mL) and the extracts washed with brine (2×200 mL), dried (MgSO4) and evaporated. The residue was chromatographed on silica gel with 2% methanol in dichloromethane as eluent to afford the title compound, mp 140°-1° C. (ethyl acetate-hexane).
