Reaction Steps
3-Chloropropoxybenzene (8g, 47 mmol) was added to a stirred solution of 2-phenylbutyric acid (8.5 g, 52 mmol) in trifluoroacetic anhydride (7.5 ml, 52 mmol) and stirring continued for 16 h. The mixture was poured into saturated sodium bicarbonate solution (100 ml), neutralized by addition of sodium bicarbonate, and extracted with ethyl acetate (3×50 ml). The combined organic extracts were washed with water (2×50 ml), dried (MgSO4), and concentrated in vacuo. The residues were distilled to give the title compound as a white waxy solid (12.01 g, 81%) bp 200° C. at 0.1 mm Hg.
