3-(Octadecyloxy)propanol (5.0 g), 1,6-dibromohexane (11.1 g) and cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (0.97 g) are added to toluene (60 ml). To the mixture is added a 50% aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide (12.2 g), and the resulting mixture is stirred at 80° C. for 7 hours. After the reaction, the organic layer is separated, and the aqueous layer is subjected to extraction with n-hexane. The organic layers are combined, washed with dilute hydrochloric acid, dried and concentrated. The residue is subjected to purification by means of silica gel chromatography to obtain the above-titled compound as colorless solid (2.44 g).
