285 mg of 6-nitro-β-carbolin-3-carboxylic acid ethyl ester is introduced into 5.8 g of bromine and stirred for 2 days at room temperature. The mixture is then diluted with 15 ml of chloroform and filtered with suction. The residue is recrystallized from pyridine and chromatographed on silica gel with chloroform-methanol (9:1). 65 mg of 8-bromo-6-nitro-β-carbolin-3-carboxylic acid ethyl ester of melting point 291°-292° C. is obtained.
