Reaction Steps

5-(Bromoacetyl)-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde (10 g) is suspended in 2-propanol (60 ml) under an inert atmosphere and cooled to 0°. To the stirring slurry is added 1,1-dimethylethanamine (13 ml) and the reaction mixture permitted to warm to room temperature and stir for 50 minutes. The solution is then treated with a mixture of concentrated sulfuric acid (3.5 ml), 2-propanol (6.5 ml) and deionized water (5 ml). The reaction mixture is stirred for a further 18 hours whereupon the title compound (10.2 g) is isolated by filtration and dried in vacuo at 50°.
