Procedure

To a stirred and cooled mixture (ice bath, 0° C.) of 30 parts of 1-(4-amino-3-nitrophenyl)-2-methyl-1-propanone and 390 parts of dichloromethane were added dropwise 33 parts of acetyl chloride. Upon complete addition, the reaction mixture was stirred for 12 hours at room temperature. The whole was poured into water and after the addition of sodium carbonate, stirring was continued for 15 minutes. The separated organic layer was dried, filtered and evaporated, yielding 36 parts (100%) of N-[4-(2-methyl-1-oxopropyl)-2-nitrophenyl]acetamide (interm. 14).
