Procedure
Where R1 is hydrogen and R2 is carbomethoxy, a compound of formula I, such as N-[1-(7-carbomethoxy-5,5-dioxo-10,11-dihydro dibenzo [b,f] thiepin-2-yl) ethyl]-N-hydroxy urea, may be hydrolyzed by base, such as aqueous sodium hydroxide, in an alcoholic solvent, such as ethanol to yield the N-[1-(7-carboxy-5,5-dioxo-10,11-dihydro dibenzo [b,f] thiepin-2-yl)ethyl]-N-hydroxy urea.
