Reaction Steps

1.0 g of methyl 3-[(2-aminoethyl)thio]-2-thiophenecarboxylate hydrochloride was suspended in 20 ml of toluene under argon, whereupon 9.4 ml of 1N sodium methylate solution in methanol were added. After the reaction finished, the mixture was evaporated in vacuo and the residue was treated with 20 ml of water. The crystals were removed by filtration, washed with water and dried. By recrystallization there was obtained 3,4-dihydrothieno-[2,3-f][1,4]thiazepin-5(2H)-one as white crystals of m.p. 186°-188°. The reaction can also be carried out with 1.1 mol equivalents of potassium tert-butylate solution in toluene.
