According to the procedure of W. Adcock, et al. Aust. J. Chem. 18, 1351 (1965), a suspension of ethyl 8-nitro-2-naphthoate prepared according to Price, et al. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 74, 3652 (1952) (8.2 g, 0.033 mol) in ethanol (240 mL) was hydrogenated at 50 psi over 10% Pd/C (820 mg) for 4 hours. The mixture was filtered through Solka floc® and concentrated. Recrystallization of the residue from EtOH/H2O gave a yellow solid (5.2 g, 72%), m.p. 97°-98° C.
