1.053 g (0.004 mole) of 10-methoxy 6-methyl 5H-pyrido[3',4':4,5]pyrrolo[2,3-g]isoquinoline are suspended in 5.6 ml (0.040 mole) of dichlorophenylphosphine oxide and the suspension is heated at 160° C. for 2 hours. The reaction mixture is poured onto ice and the pH is brought to 7 by the addition of 10N sodium hydroxide. After filtration and drying of the precipitate formed, 0.580 g of 10-chloro 6-methyl 5H-pyrido[3',4':4,5]pyrrolo[2,3-g]isoquinoline are obtained.
