Procedure
65 g of diethyl 3-methylisoxazole-4,5-dicarboxylate, dissolved in 100 ml of ethanol, are added dropwise to 18.9 g of potassium hydroxide in 100 ml of water at room temperature. After 16 hours, the mixture is poured onto 300 ml of water and extracted with ether, and the aqueous phase is acidified with concentration hydrochloric acid. Extracting with dichloromethane and evaporating down give 3-methyl-4-ethoxycarbonylisoxazole-5-carboxylic acid as colorless crystals of melting point 54°-58° C.
