Procedure

2-carboethoxy-6-chloro-5-hydroxy-4-oxo-4H-1-benzopyran is dissolved in glacial acetic acid and water (5:1) and the solution refluxed for 4 hours. This is cooled and the resulting solid collected and washed with water to give 2-carboxy-6-chloro-5-hydroxy-4-oxo-4H-1-benzopyran.
