Triethylsilane (11 mL, 68 mmol) was added to a solution of ethyl 4-(4-nitro-1H-indol-3-yl)-4-oxobutanoate from Step A (960 mg, 3.31 mmol) in TFA (15 mL). After 3 h, the reaction mixture was concentrated in vacuo and the residue was purified by silica gel chromatography, eluting with a gradient of CHCl3:MeOH-100:0 to 94:6, to give the title compound. MS: m/z=279 (M+1).
