To a solution of 4,6-dichloro-1,3-dihydro-2H-imidazo[4,5-c]pyridin-2-one (0.6 g, 2.94 mmol) from Step C in conc. H2SO4(15 mL) was added KNO3 (2.97 g, 29.4 mmol) and the reaction mixture was heated at 125° C. for 2 h. After cooling, the reaction was mixed with ice and the solid precipitate was isolated by filtration and washed with cold H2O to give the title compound. MS: m/z 290 (M+1+CH3CN).
