Nitric acid (5.65 mL, 125.55 mmol, 70%) was added slowly to a mixture of selenophene-2,5-dicarboxylic acid (11 g, 50.2 mmol) in sulfuric acid (21.87 mL, 401.77 mmol) at 0-5° C. for 15 min. The mixture was allowed to rt with stifling slowly for 2 h, poured into ice cold water and stirred for 30 min. The solution was extracted with ethyl acetate (3×200 mL) and the combined organic layer was washed with water, brine and dried over sodium sulfate. The solution was filtered and evaporated the solvent to give the product as pale yellow color solid (10 g, 76%, it is a mixture of 2 compounds).
