94 μl (0.657 mmol) of 2-benzyloxyethanol and 50.4 mg (0.438 mmol) of (cyanomethylene)trimethylphosphorane (Tet. Lett., 1996, 37, 2459-2462) are added to a solution of 68 mg (0.329 mmol) of ethyl 5-fluoro-1H-indole-2-carboxylate in 2 ml of toluene, stirred at 20° C. The reaction mixture is heated at 110° C. for 12 hours and then concentrated under reduced pressure, taken up in 20 ml of ethyl ether, filtered over a celite buffer and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue obtained is purified by preparative HPLC, elution being carried out with a mixture of water, acetonitrile and trifluoroacetic acid. 99 mg of a yellow oil are thus isolated.
