Platinum on carbon (1.2 g of 5%) was added to a solution of N-benzyl-7-bromo-3-nitroquinolin-4-amine (10.9 g, 30.4 mmol) in acetonitrile (300 mL) in a Parr vessel. The mixture was placed under hydrogen pressure (30 psi, 2.1×105 Pa) overnight and then filtered through a layer of CELITE filter agent. The filter cake was washed with methanol. The filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure and further dried for two hours on a vacuum pump to provide 6.33 g of N4-benzyl-7-bromoquinoline-3,4-diamine as a dark green solid.
