A solution of 4′-bromomethylbiphenyl-2-carboxylic acid t-butyl ester made as described in Preparation 2 (7.2 g, 20.8 mmol), N-(2-aminoethyl)(t-butoxy)carboxamide (10 g, 62.4 mmol), and potassium carbonate (4.3 g, 31.2 mmol) in THF (40 mL) was stirred at room temperature overnight. The mixture was concentrated then extracted with EtOAc (3×150 mL) and water (80 mL). The combined organic extracts were dried over Na2SO4, filtered, and concentrated in vacuo to afford crude intermediate (3a) (98.4% yield), which was used in the next step without further purification.
