Intermediate (7a) (3.3 g, 5.2 mmol) was dissolved in DCM and cooled to 0° C. DIPEA (2.7 mL, 15.6 mmol) was added, followed by benzyl chloroformate (804 μL, 5.7 mmol). After 90 minutes, water (20 mL) was added and the mixture was extracted DCM (3×80 mL) then washed with saturated aqueous NaCl. The combined organic extracts were dried over MgSO4, filtered, and concentrated in vacuo to afford intermediate (7b) as a white solid (4.6 g).
