The 3,4-dihydro-4,4-dimethyl-2-(dimethylaminomethylene)-1-(2H)-naphthalenone starting material was prepared from 4,4-dimethyl-1-tetralone (3.48 g, 20 mmol) and N,N-dimethylformamide diethyl acetal (10.5 ml, 60 mmol) to give the desired compund as bright yelikow crystals (3.53 g). δH (CDCl3) 8.05 (1H, ddd, J 7.7, 1.5, 0.5 Hz), 7.78 (1H, s), 7.42 (1H, m), 7.33-7.25 (2H,m), 3.12 (6H, s), 2.80 (2H, s) and 1.33 (6H, s).
