3,4-Dihydro-2-dimethylaminomethylene-7-ethyl-1(2H) naphthalenone was prepared from 7-ethyl-1-tetralone (5 g, 30.0 mmol) and N,N-dimethylformamide diethylacetal (15 ml) to give the compound as a yellow solid (4.6 g) m.p. 132-139°. δH (CDCl3) 7.87 (1H, d, J 1.7 Hz), 7.71 (1H, s), 7.21 (1H, dd, J 2.0, 7.7 Hz), 7.08 (1H, d, J 7.7 Hz), 3.11 (6H, s), 2.85 (4H, m), 2.66 (2H, q, J 7.6 Hz) and 1.24 (3H, m).
