Reaction Steps

The crude product was taken up in 500 cm3 of toluene, admixed with 1.5 g of p-toluenesulfonic acid and heated under reflux for 2 hours with a water separator. The reaction mixture was washed 3 times with 50 cm3 of saturated aqueous NaHCO3 solution and the solvent was removed under reduced pressure. Filtration through 200 g of silica gel (hexane/methylene chloride) gave 18.4 g (72%) of 17 as a colorless oil.
