Procedure
To a solution containing 1.01 g of the title compound of Step B dissolved in approximately 50 mL of acetic acid cooled to 0° C. was added 0.24 mL of bromine. The mixture was allowed to warm to room temperature and stirred for 24 h. The reaction mixture was filtered to obtain 0.60 g of a white solid. The white solid was purified by column chromatography on silica gel eluting with hexane and then 8:1 hexane:ethyl acetate. Collection and evaporation of those fractions containing the least polar component (according to thin layer chromatography, 6:1 hexane:ethyl acetate mixture as the development solvent) yielded 0.12 g of the title compound of Step C, a compound of the invention, as a white solid melting at 146-147° C. 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCI3): δ 1.02 (t,3H), 1.81 (m,2H), 2.71 (s,3H), 4.11 (t,2H), 7.69 (s,1H).
