Reaction Steps

The reaction of 3-methyl-1,3-diphenylmethyl-2-piperidinone (2.93 g, 10 mmol) with Li metal (0.70 g, 100 mmol) in THF (30 mL) and liquid NH3 (200 mL), as described above in the preparation of Example 11, gave 3.18 g of a colorless viscous residue. Flash chromatography over silica gel (1% MeOH in CHCl3 -EtOAc, 1:1) afforded the lactam (1.75 g, 86% ) as a colorless solid: mp 76-78° C. (ether-hexane).
