0.52 ml (3.12 mmol) of triethyl ortho-formate was added to 0.12 g (0.312 mmol) of of 3-amino-4-[3-(benzyloxycarbonylamino)propylamino]-2-chloroquinoline. The mixture was heated at 100° C. and stirred for 3.5 hours. The reaction mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure to obtain 0.12 g (0.304 mmol) of 1-[3-(benzyloxycarbonylamino)propyl]-4-chloro-1H-imidazo[4,5-c]-quinoline (shown below) as a pale yellow solid.
