Procedure
18.0 g of methyl, 2,6-dimethoxy-5-iodopyrimidine-4-carboxylate are introduced in portions into a stirred solution of 2.4 g of sodium hydroxide in 70 ml of methanol and 4 ml of water. Stirring is allowed to continue overnight at room temperature, the methanol is distilled off and the residue is taken up in water. The aqueous phase is extracted using ethyl acetate, acidified to pH 2-3 using conc. hydrochloric acid and extracted using dichloromethane. The combined dichloromethane extracts are dried over sodium sulfate and the solvent is distilled off in vacuo. 10.1 g of 2,6-dimethoxy-5-iodopyrimidine-4-carboxylic acid of melting point 125°-126° C. are obtained in this way.
