A solution of sodium hydroxide, 2-methoxyethanol and ether was added to 70 mg (0.21 mmol) of ethyl 4-[(E)-2-(2-methyl-4-tert-butylphenyl)propen-1-yl]benzoate (Compound 28) and the resulting mixture stirred at room temperature for 5 hours. Solvent was removed in-vacuo and the resulting solid taken-up in water, acidified using 1N HCl, and extracted with ether. The ether extracts were washed with water, brine and dried (MgSO4). The solvent was removed in-vacuo to give the title compound as a yellow solid.
