Procedure

A mixture of 24.2 parts of 3-methoxy-1-(phenylmethyl)-4piperidinone, 16 parts of N-methylmethanamine, 1 part of a thiophene solution in methanol and 520 parts of methanol was hydrogenated at normal pressure and at 50° C. with 3 parts of palladium-on-charcoal catalyst 10%. After the calculated amount of hydrogen was taken up, the catalyst was filtered off and the filtrate was evaporated, yielding 27.3 parts (100%) of cis-3-methoxy-N,N-dimethyl-1-(phenylmethyl)-4-piperidinamine (int. 27).
