Procedure

In the manner described in Example 99, (E,E)-5-(2-methoxyphenyl)-5-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2,4-pentadienoic acid methyl ester (4.3 g) was saponified in a refluxing mixture of methanol (35 mL) and 1N NaOH (35 mL). After 1 hour the reaction was worked up in the usual fashion and the crude acid was crystallized from 2-propanol to afford 3.6 g of (E,E)-5-(2-methoxyphenyl)-5-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2,4-pentadienoic acid, mp 210.5°-211.5° C.

Workup

  1. customthe crude acid was crystallized from 2-propanol
