As described in Example 99, (2E,4Z)-5-(4-methoxyphenyl)-6-methyl-2,4-heptadienoic acid methyl ester (4.2 g) was saponified in a refluxing mixture of methanol (15 mL) and 2N NaOH (15 mL). After 2 hours reaction was worked up in the usual way to afford 3.8 g of (2E,4Z)-5-(4-methoxyphenyl)-6-methyl-2,4-heptadienoic acid. A sample was crystallized from cyclohexane-hexane to give the analytical specimen, mp 131.5°-133° C.
