Procedure

As in Example 115, (E,E)-5-cyclopropyl-5-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2,4-pentadienoic acid (2.7 g) and 4-nitrophenol (1.844 g) in 20 mL of dichloromethane was treated with 1,3-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (2.3 g) and the mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight. After the usual work up, the ester was crystallized from 2-propanol to yield 2.8 g of (E,E)-5-cyclopropyl-5-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2,4-pentadienoic acid 4-nitrophenyl ester. mp 111°-112.5° C.
