Procedure

2,2-Bis-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2-hydroxy-1-(1-imidazolyl)-1-(4-cyanophenyl)-ethane (10.2 g) is dissolved in thionyl chloride (25 mL) and the solution is stirred at room temperature for 36 hours. The solvent is evaporated and the residue is chromatographed on silica gel (250 g). Elution with ethyl acetate affords the crystalline 2,2-bis-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1-(1-imidazolyl)-1-(4-cyanophenyl)-ethylene. The compound has m.p. 174°14 176° after recrystallization from isopropanol.
