A mixture of 2.5 parts of 5-methyl-3-(methylthio)-1-(4-nitrophenyl)-1H-1,2,4-triazole and 120 parts of methanol is hydrogenated at normal pressure and at room temperature with 2 parts of platinum-on-characoal catalyst 10%. After the calculated amount of hydrogen is taken up, the catalyst is filtered off and the filtrate is evaporated. The residue is crystallized from a mixture of 4-methyl-2-pentanone and petroleumether. The product is filtered off and dried, yielding 1.5 parts (68%) 4-[5-methyl-3-(methylthio)-1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl]benzenamine; mp. 130°-136° C.
