Reaction Steps

A suspension of 8-ethyltheophylline (20.8 g; 0.1 M) in dry dimethylformamide (100 ml) was added to an oil free suspension of sodium hydride (2.4 g; 0.1 M) in dry dimethylformamide (100 ml) and the mixture was stirred for 30 minutes. 3-Phenoxypropylbromide (21.5 g; 0.1 M) was added and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 24 hours. The resulting suspension was poured into water and the precipitate was filtered off and dried. The solid was crystallised from ethanol to give 8-ethyl-7-(3-phenoxy propyl)theophylline as white prisms 23.6 g (69%) mp 107°-8°.
