Reduction of methyl (S)-1',2',3',4'-tetrahydro-2'-hydroxy-5',8'-dimethoxyspiro[1,3-dithiolane-2,4'-naphthalene]-2'-carboxylate [prepared as described in Example 4(ii)] with sodium borohydride in tetrahydrofuran in a manner analogous to that described in Example 5(i) gave (S)-1',2',3',4'-tetrahydro-3'-hydroxy-3'-hydroxymethyl-5',8'-dimethoxyspiro[1,3-dithiolane-2,1'-naphthalene] in the form of a colourless gum which was used directly in the next step.
