A mixture of 4.2 g. (8.73 mmols) of 1-benzyl-3-[2-benzyloxy-4-(1,1-dimethylheptyl)phenyl]-1,2,5,6-tetrahydropyridine, 4.0 g. of 10% palladium-on-carbon and 50 ml. of ethanol is stirred under one atmosphere of hydrogen for 2 hours. The reaction mixture is filtered through diatomaceous earth with ethyl acetate, evaporated and the residue again dissolved in ethyl acetate and filtered. The filtrate is evaporated and the residue crystallized in ether to yield 1.1 g. (42%) of the title compound.
