2-Chloro-5-cyano-2,3-dihydro-3,3-dimethylbenzofuran (2 g), prepared as in Example 45, was heated under reflux in glacial acetic acid (20 ml) for 31/4 hours. The solution was then added to ice/water and the product was separated by filtration and dried. The crude yield was 1.8 g. Recrystallisation from ethanol gave 1.6 g of title product, mp 138°-140° C.
