Procedure
A solution of tetramethylguanidinium formate in methylene chloride was prepared by combining at room temperature 0.064 g of formic acid with 0.159 g of tetramethylguanidine in 15 ml of methylene chloride. The solution was stirred at room temperature for 5 minutes and a solution of 0.311 g, 1 eq., of 2,2,2-trichloroethyl 7-acetamido-2-chloromethylidene-3-methyl-3-cephem-4-carboxylate sulfoxide in about 25 ml of methylene chloride was added. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 5 minutes during which time the color of the solution changed from yellow to brown. The reaction mixture was washed with water and an aqueous solution of sodium chloride, was dried, and evaporated to dryness. The 2-formyloxymethylidene ester sulfoxide was obtained as a yellow froth weighing 0.308 g (97% yield).
