Procedure
Fifteen milliliters (ml) of water, 25 ml of dichloromethane, 4 ml (0.075 mole) of 50% sodium hydroxide and 7.2 grams (g) (0.03 mole) of 2-methyl-4-(aminomethyl)-4-(2-chlorophenyl)-1,3-dioxane were added to a reaction flask and cooled to 5° C. with an ice bath. Four and a half g of chloroacetyl chloride in 10 ml of dichloromethane were added at a rate slow enough to keep the temperature under 10° C. The reaction mixture was stirred for 1/2 hour and allowed to come to room temperature.
