Reaction Steps

A solution of 5 g (0.015 m) of ethyl-4-(1,2-benzisoxazol-3-yl)-2,3-dimethylphenoxyacetate of Example 1D, 25 ml 10% NaOH and 25 ml of ethanol is refluxed 3 hours. Ethanol is evaporated in vacuo and 5% HCl is added to the residue until the mixture is acidic. The mixture is extracted with ethyl acetate, dried (Na2SO4) and evaporated to give 3.8 g (83%) of 4-(1,2-benzisoxazol-3-yl)-2,3-dimethylphenoxyacetic acid, m.p. 146°-152° C. An analytical sample is recrystallized from ethanol/H2O, m.p. 147°-152° C.
