Reaction Steps
1-(4-Nitrobenzoyl)amino-2-(2-hydroxymethylphenyl)ethane (15.3 g) was dissolved in 200 ml of chloroform, and with stirring under ice cooling, 15.9 g of phosphorus pentachloride was added gradually. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 8 hours, and then the solvent was distilled off. The residue was dissolved in benzene, washed in water, and dried, followed by distilling off the solvent. The residue was recrystallized from benzene-n-hexane to afford 15.7 g of 1-(4-nitrobenzoyl)amino-2-(2-chloromethylphenyl)ethane having a melting point of 125.9° to 126.3° C.
