Reaction Steps

Six (6) grams of 1-(4-nitrophenyl)-3,4-dihydroisoquinoline-5-acetonitrile and 5 g of diphenyl disulfide were reacted for 6 hours over an oil bath at 165° C. After the reaction, the reaction mixture was extracted with chloroform, chromatographed, and recrystallized from acetone-n-hexane to afford 2.5 g of 1-(4-nitrophenyl)-isoquinoline-5-acetonitrile having a melting point of 218.9° to 219.3° C.
