Propionic acid (cat.) was added to a solution of 31.5 (69 mg, 0.24 mmol) in 1,1,1-triethoxy-ethane (440 μL, 2.4 mmol). The reaction was stirred at 105° C. overnight. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure and the resulting residue was purified via radial chromatography (5% ethyl acetate in hexanes) to yield 33 mg (39%) of 3-[2-Methyl-4-(2-methyl-benzyloxy)-phenyl]-hex-4-enoic acid ethyl ester (31.6). LC/MSD m/e: 375.0 (M+Na).
