PROCEDURE

6-Phenyl-pyrimidin-4-ol was prepared by reducing 2-mercapto-6-phenyl-pyrimidin-4-ol (1.5 g, 7.3 mmol) in the presence of raney nickel (5 equivalents) in aqueous ammonia (30 mL) at room temperature followed by refluxing for 3 hours. The mixture was filtered through Celite™ and extracted with ethyl acetate (3×20 mL). Combined organic layers were dried over anhydrous Na2SO4, concentrated under vacuum and the residue purified by column chromatography to give the desired compound (0.5 g, 40% yield) as a off white solid.
