A mixture of 2-[2-hydroxy-3-(o-tolyloxy)phenyl]glycine (10.6 g) and phthalic anhydride (5.7 g) was heated in an oil bath (200° C.) for 5 minutes. After cooling, the reaction mixture was subjected to column chromatography on silica gel (280 g) and eluted with benzene to give 3-phthalimido-7-(o-tolyloxy)-2,3-dihydrobenzofuran-2-one (1.8 g). mp 168°-170° C.
