Procedure
Aqueous solution (50 ml) of potassium hydroxide (10.4 g) was added portionwise to a mixture of 6-(2-fluorophenoxy)-o-cresol (13.5 g) and dimethyl sulfate (15.5 g) with stirring under ice-cooling, and the mixture was refluxed under heating for an hour. After cooling, the reaction mixture was extracted with n-hexane, and the extract was washed with 10% aqueous sodium hydroxide and water, dried and then evaporated. The residue was purified by column chromatography (silica gel, benzene.n-hexane) to give oily 2-fluorophenyl 2-methoxy-3-methylphenyl ether (11.6 g).
