Sodium borohydride (550 mg) was added in 10 minutes to a solution of 2-methoxy-3-(2-chlorophenylthio)benzaldehyde (9.1 g) in methanol (50 ml) with stirring at temperature below 15° C. After stirring the mixture at room temperature for 30 minutes, methanol was distilled off under reduced pressure. The residue was dissolved in water, acidified with conc. hydrochloric acid and extracted with diethyl ether. The extract was washed with water, dried and then evaporated under reduced pressure to give oily 2-methoxy-3-(2-chlorophenylthio)benzyl alcohol (9 g).
