To a suspension of 2-hydroxy-3-(2-chlorophenylthio)benzaldehyde (5.8 g) in methanol (50 ml) was added sodium borohydride (820 mg) at temperature below 15° C. with stirring. The mixture was treated in a similar manner to that of Example 21-(5) to give oily 2-hydroxy-3-(2-chlorophenylthio)benzyl alcohol (6 g). This oily substance was left to stand at room temperature to give crystals.
