Procedure

3.06 g of 1,3-bis(benzylideneamino)-1,3-dihydro-2H-imidazole-2-thione in 100 ml of absolute methylene chloride are treated with 1.47 g of trimethyloxonium tetrafluoroborate. The mixture is stirred at room temperature for 3 hours and the resulting precipitate is removed by filtration under suction. From the filtrate, by the addition of diethyl ether, there is precipitated a additional portion of the desired product which, together with the first portion, is washed once with water, once with cold methanol and three times with diethyl ether and subsequently reprecipitated from acetonitrile/diethyl ether. There is obtained colorless 1,3-bis(benzylideneamino)-2-(methylthio)imidazolium tetrafluoroborate of melting point 215°-220° (decomposition).
