Procedure
Finely powdered potassium nitrate (81 mg, 0.8 mmol) was added during a few minutes to a stirred solution of 2,3-dihydroxy-10-nitrobenzo(f)quinoxaline (0.21 g, 0.B mmol) in 3 ml of conc. sulfuric acid at 0° C. After stirring over night at room temperature, the solution was poured into 50 ml of ice/water. The yellow precipitate was isolated, washed with water, dried and recrystallized from 96% ethanol affording 0.12 g (50%) of the dinitro compound, m.p.> 300° C., IR (KBr): 700 cm-1 (C=0),1H-NMR (DMSO-d6): 7.72 (t,J=8 Hz,1H,H-8), 8.10 (dd,J7-8 =8Hz,J7-91Hz, 1H, H-7), 8.23 (s,1H,H-5), 8.55 (dd,J9-8 =8 Hz, J9-7 =1Hz, 1H,H-9), 12.9 (broad s, 1H, OH, only one exchangeable proton could be seen).
